The Aeropress is one of the most radical developments in coffee-brewing for decades and an inspired piece of simple engineering. A laterally thought-out design package that puts you in charge of your brewing parameters and creates a clean brew from the paper filter but keeps a lot of the oils to give good body and sweetness. No moving parts to break. Portable, versatile, light, neat, cheap ...and fun! (Almost as much fun as their other invention: The Aerobie Frisbee!).

BREWING WITH AEROPRESS

There are many ways of making coffee with an Aeropress, each achieving different results. The ability to trap brewing coffee in the lower chamber means you can easily control brewing time and temperature making it easier to play around with different strengths and brew methods. In fact, its versatility has gained it so much popularity among the barista community that it now has its own annual World Aeropress Championships. Here are a couple of brew methods to try out.

TRADITIONAL METHOD

This brewing method is simple to do, with a regular brew ratio and is most similar to how the Aeropress was originally inteded to be used.

1. Grind 18g of coffee on a fine filter setting, (a full scoop provided in the pack)
2. Wet paper filter in the filter cap and attach to the lower brewing chamber.
3. Place on a mug (filter cap at the bottom) and add ground coffee.
4. Pour 220g of water off the boil within 10 seconds, wetting all the grounds.
5. Stir the coffee and attach plunger, creating a seal.
6. Leave to brew for 1 minute.
7. Remove plunger to stir again then re-attach and plunge for 30 seconds.

INVERTED METHOD

This brew method is a bit more advanced but tastes great if you can get it right. This method in particular is also known as a by-pass method and involves making a sort of coffee concentrate which can then be diluted to your desired strength. You should be able to get a bit more sweetness in the cup here and reduce some bitterness as well.

1. Grind 28g of coffee on a coarse setting.
2. Pre-wet paper filter in filter cap and set to one side.
3. Attach plunger to brewing chamber and turn upside down on some scales if you have them.
4. Add ground coffee to the Aeropress.
5. Let water cool to around 85 degrees before brewing.
6. Pour 100g of coffee over the grounds in 30 seconds.
7. Stir well for about 10 seconds.
8. After one minute, screw on filter cap.
9. Flip, place on a cup or decanter and plunge for about 30 seconds.
10. Dilute with more hot water to roughly 120g. Stir and enjoy!
